| It all began innocent enough... The 1990 NBEA program listed the following on the agenda:
4:00 Board a Victorian style trolley at the hotel, then to the
Liberty Bell where
we will meet our guide. We
will see such sites as Independence Hall,
Betsy Ross House, Congress Hall,
Elfreth's Alley, etc. and go into as
many as time allows. Plans
then are for cocktails at the old City Tavern
and on to Dicken's Inn for dinner.
We will return via a scenic route to the
hotel around 10:00. |
At the appointed time
outside of the Cherry Hill Inn the trolley awaited.
Dale & Kathy Higgins took the following photos of the trolley and of the convention
attendees inside the trolley. |

The Passengers
You can see the eager anticipation on their faces as
they wait for the trolley to depart. Obviously having no knowledge of what lay in
store for them. |
| It was a lovely day, and all was going as
planned. The tour was enjoyable and the evening was topped off with an excellent
dinner. But the 'scenic' tour back to the hotel turned into the |
| There were numerous reports from the passengers as to what
happened on that fateful trolley ride. Naturally, due to the stress that these
people experienced, not all accounts can be verified. However, one item they all
agree upon was the interaction between various passengers and the bus driver as
illustrated below. |
| Those that were on the trolley speak very little of the
incident. Those willing to talk, do so guardedly, and with a haunted expression. Suffice
it to say that at the next meeting of the NBEA, a resolution was adopted that forbid the
executive director from scheduling any trolley rides at future conventions. |
This is as much of the story as
we dare tell. |
